32 Days in Bali: A Journey of Self-Discovery

32 days, 7,997 photos, one conference, two retreats, seven hotels, waterfalls, temples, rice terraces, diving and hiking, beaches and boats, daily massages, sunrises and sunsets, countless bottles of sun cream, fresh juices, exotic fruits, a suitcase brimming with shells, and 721,072 steps. In brief, this was my Bali experience.
Bali has always been a dream of mine, a destination that called to my soul in ways I couldn’t explain. Why Bali, and not Bora Bora or Thailand? I’ve no idea, but whenever someone asked me where I’d want to live, my answer was always the same: Bali. And this was before I had ever stepped foot on the island.
Now, I understand why.
Bali possesses a unique and magical energy, a kind of stillness where time seems to slow, and the outside world ceases to matter.
I arrived in Bali with grand plans and aspirations:
- To complete my book,
- To revamp my website,
- To exercise daily,
- To start building a team to expand my business.
However, now, over a month later, I must admit that, despite attending GSS2024 and hosting my retreats, none of those goals were achieved. Instead, I embarked on an unexpected and profound journey of self-discovery.
During my time there, I uncovered and released deeply rooted traumas and limiting beliefs. I shifted the stories that had held me back, and now I wish to share these insights with you. My hope is that some of my revelations will resonate with you, inspiring your own personal transformation.
I’ll be unfolding these stories in upcoming articles—I don’t want this post to turn into a novel! So, let’s start with one simple but significant part of my Bali experience: daily massages.
The Power of Daily Massages
The idea of having daily massages might seem indulgent, but for me, it was transformative. It was more than just a health benefit—it was a realisation of a long-held dream.
I used to imagine that once I became a millionaire, I would treat myself to daily massages. I know, it sounds a bit extravagant, but we all have our quirks and desires, don’t we?
Upon arriving in Bali and discovering that massages cost between £5 and £20, I realised I could make this dream a reality. And as it turns out, in Balinese currency, I was already a millionaire! Perhaps that’s the simplest way to experience “overnight success”—just fly to Bali, check your balance at an ATM, and voilà!
So, I committed to daily massages, and by the second day, something interesting surfaced within me. An internal voice questioned, “Why would you want daily massages? Who does that?”
It was in that moment I realised: this was the story of my life—wanting more but feeling guilty for it. Even worse, I feared judgment from others, and the idea that my indulgence might make them feel bad.
This tangle of interconnected stories hit me hard.
It all traced back to my grandmother, who, much like Scrooge McDuck, has always been incredibly frugal. Growing up, I absorbed her mindset that money wasn’t for enjoyment, but for saving—just in case. That belief shaped a subconscious pattern within me, one that dictated that every penny must be hoarded, never spent frivolously.
Despite years of working on my money mindset, especially in the past 15 years, I hadn’t realised this sneaky little story still had a hold over me. Yes, I’d learned how to manifest, manage, and multiply my wealth, and now even help others with their money mindset, but I hadn’t allowed myself to *enjoy* my money fully, without guilt.
That realisation was a powerful moment.
On that day, I made a conscious choice to rewrite that old narrative. I used my KICK-START system to reframe it into something new and empowering: when I allow myself to be, do, and have more joyfully, I inspire others to do the same.
Shifting the Story
What I found most fascinating was how people's reactions changed when I spoke about my daily massages. Before this shift, I would explain myself—detailing the benefits of massages, justifying the affordability, and listing reasons to make it seem less extravagant. It was as though I felt I needed to apologise for it, even though I knew I didn’t.
After shifting my story, I no longer felt the need to explain. I simply responded with, “Why not?” And to my surprise, people’s responses shifted as well. Instead of judgment, they would tell me how great it was that I was doing this for myself, and some even started thinking they should do the same!
